Lisa Rider

Lisa Rider, MD, a pediatric rheumatologist, is Acting Head of the Environmental Autoimmunity Group, National Institute of Environmental Health Science, National Institutes of Health, in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Rider received her MD from Duke University School of Medicine, and completed her pediatrics residency and the clinical portion of her pediatric rheumatology fellowship at Seattle Children's/University of Washington. She completed a post-doctoral research fellowship as a Clinical Associate in the laboratory of Dr. Henry Metzger at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. She then joined the laboratory of Dr. Frederick Miller at the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research of the Food and Drug Administration and later of NIEHS, where she became Deputy Chief of the group. Dr. Rider’s research has focused on juvenile myositis, in which she has led the international development of validated outcome measures and trial response criteria, defined the major autoantibody phenotypes and associated outcomes, studied genetic and environmental disease risk factors, and led clinical trials of new biologic therapies. She has authored or co-authored more than 140 research publications, 50 reviews and book chapters, and a book, Myositis and You. She also co-established and is co-chair of the International Myositis Assessment and Clinical Studies Group (IMACS) and the Childhood Myositis Heterogeneity Study Group. For the past 12 years, Dr. Rider has also been Clinical Professor of Medicine at George Washington University, where she sees patients in consultation and leads research on juvenile myositis. She has received several awards in recognition of her contributions, including the 2017 Cure JM Lifetime Achievement in Research award and The Myositis Association's 25th Anniversary Research Award: For Outstanding Contributions to Myositis Research over the past 15 years, and the AAP James T Cassidy Award for outstanding achievement in pediatric rheumatology.
