Luis Umana, MD

Dr. Luis Umaña earned his medical degree form Universidad del Rosario in Colombia. He completed a residency in Pediatrics at St Barnabas Hospital in New York and completed a second residency in clinical genetics and a fellowship in Medical Biochemical genetics at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
Dr. Umaña joined UTSW in 2014 as assistant professor for the Division of genetics and metabolism in the Department of pediatrics. His main clinical and academic interests include the diagnosis and management of inborn errors of metabolism and the newborn screening program.
Dr. Umaña also works as part of the Texas Department of Health and Human resources Metabolic consultants group for the Newborn screening program.
Dr. Umaña has authored book chapters related to one carbon metabolism; as well as papers on genetics of metabolic disorders and collaborated in the updated chapter on dyslipidemias on the 23rd edition of Rudolph’s pediatrics.
Dr. Umaña has been involved in clinical trials on the treatment of different inborn errors of metabolism including Mucopolysaccharidosis type 3; as well as disorders of aminoacid metabolism, and urea cycle.
Dr. Umaña has been named by Texas Monthly Magazine as one of the rising stars from 2016-2018 and has been also named in the list of best pediatric Specialists in Dallas from 2018-2020 by D Magazine.
Dr. Umaña is board certified in pediatrics, Clinical genetics and Medical biochemical genetics and is a member of the Society for Inherited Metabolic Disorders.
