Hilary Miller, JD
Hilary J. Miller is a zealous litigator and talented attorney with many skills and a diverse legal background in the public and private sectors. Prior to joining Hughes Atwood & Mullaly PLLC, Hilary served as an Assistant District Attorney for Dallas County, Texas. From 2013-2020 Hilary prosecuted thousands of cases across numerous divisions within the D.A.’s office including the Felony Trial Division, Misdemeanor Division, Family Violence Division, Community Prosecution Unit, and Civil Division. Hilary was lead prosecutor on a plethora of criminal cases, including but not limited to Driving While Intoxicated, Domestic Violence Assaults, Violation of Protective Orders, Stalking, Tampering with Government Records, Theft, Unlawful Possession of Firearm by a Felon, Arson, Aggravated Assault Deadly Weapon, and Murder.
Within the Civil Division Hilary led the Mental Illness Court Civil Commitment & Medication docket. From 2018-2020, Hilary litigated more than 1,800 trials before the Mental Illness Court of Dallas County. Additionally, while serving as a Civil Division ADA, she also represented the State of Texas on Quarantine Litigation (TB & COVID-19), Emergency Removals, and Guardianship Litigation involving Adult Protective Services and the Health & Human Services Commission. Hilary also served in an Advisory Role to the Dallas County Elected Officials and Department Heads in reviewing legal inquiries and issuing legal opinions to those leaders. Furthermore, Hilary reviewed contracts and business transactions on behalf of the County as well, gaining a very well-rounded legal base to branch from the public sector into the private sector.
Hilary’s work with the Mental Illness Court and psychiatrists in Dallas County led to her joining the University of Texas Southwestern team as an Adjunct Faculty Associate, beginning with her volunteer work in 2018. She loves working with the Psychiatry Residents as well as the Forensic Fellows and teaching didactics, seminars, case studies, and the like. Hilary says it is a pleasure and privilege to engage in the teaching profession and have direct contact with the Psychiatrists that make such an impact in the judicial system.
Prior to her years of service as an Assistant District Attorney, Hilary worked as part of the General Counsel team for DII Industries, LLC Asbestos Personal Injury Trust as a Staff Attorney. She also worked in Sydney, Australia and as a Criminal Defense Attorney in Oklahoma. Prior to those diverse experiences, Hilary held two Judicial Clerkships, one with the Judge Paul L. Backman in the 17th Judicial Circuit Court in Florida and the other a Federal Clerkship with Judge Robert E. Bacharach of the United States Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit. Prior to law school Hilary was a licensed Real Estate Agent.
Hilary is admitted to practice law in the states of New Hampshire, Oklahoma, and Texas as well as before the United States District Courts for the Northern District of Texas. Hilary also has the ability to practice law in the state of Vermont, and her application is currently pending with the Vermont Judiciary. Hilary received her B.A. in Economics and Psychology in 2008 from DePauw University where she graduated cum laude and was awarded Phi Beta Kappa; she earned her J.D. from Oklahoma City University School of Law in 2011 where she graduated cum laude and served as Executive Editor of the Law Review, Class President, Federal Bar Association President, and a Hatton W. Sumners Scholar.
Her family moved to New England in 2020 for her husband to pursue his MBA at Dartmouth and she worked remotely on Trust Litigation until joining Hughes Atwood & Mullaly PLLC. Hilary has a diverse practice, handling complex real estate litigation, corporate, guardianship, trust and estate planning, family law, and criminal defense. Hilary competently and passionately represents her clients at the law firm as well as continues to engage with UTSW Psychiatry students through remote learning opportunities, didactic trainings, and seminars.
