James Netterville
Dr. James Netterville, is the Executive Vice Chair, Department of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery, the Mark C. Smith Professor of Head & Neck Surgery, and the Associate Director, the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, TN
He served as the President of the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery from 2012 - 2013, and served on the Board of directors of our Academy from 2008 - 2014.
He was honored with the 2009 Outstanding Alumnus of the year from The University of Tennessee College of Medicine.
After helping to establish the department in Nashville, he has been on Faculty at Vanderbilt Medical Center for 34 yrs as the Director of Head & Neck Surgery. Beside treating a broad range of benign and malignant head and neck diseases, he has had an emphasis in his practice on treatment of Carotid body tumors, Head & neck paragangliomas, Parapharyngeal tumors, Schwannomas of head and neck, Thyroid & Parathyroid diseases, Skull base tumors, congenital Head & Neck tumors, Vocal cord paralysis, and Zenkers Diverticulum.
Since the first trip to Nigeria in 1999 he, in collaboration with many colleagues from the AAO-HNS, has lead more than 30 Educational outreach trips to Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and Haiti.
While at Vanderbilt he has trained 58 fellows dedicated to the practice of Head and Neck Surgery, and 120 residents who have established academic and private practices throughout the United States and abroad. Besides his wonderful immediate family, he is most proud of these 174 academic children and all they have accomplished to make the world a better place.
