Dr. Metzger graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine in 2002 after completing a seven-year bachelor/MD program. He then received his Emergency Medicine training at Duke University before moving to Texas in 2005. In Texas he completed the Government Emergency Medical and Security Services Fellowship at UT Southwestern during which he began working with the Dallas Police Department SWAT team providing operational medical support. After completing his fellowship he became Medical Director for Dallas Police Department, which allows him to serve the department in many capacities, from reviewing in-custody deaths, consulting on issues such as communicable diseases, and helping develop medical kits containing life-saving equipment to be deployed by police officers. In 2010 Dr. Metzger completed the police academy and was sworn in as a reserve police officer and continues to support the DPD SWAT team in addition to going out on patrol and helping the department during major events. He also works with the University of Texas System Police providing operational medical support for the System Rapid Response Team (SRRT) and providing other consultative and training support as well as a Special Deputy with the United States Marshals Service as part of their North Texas Fugitive Task Force.
Dr. Metzger has worked in the emergency departments at Parkland Hospital and Children’s Medical Center since 2005. In July 2016 he became the Chief of Emergency Services for Parkland Hospital.
