Dr Johnson is the Co-Director of The Fetal Center at Children's Memorial Hermann Hospital. He has been actively involved in fetal diagnosis and therapy throughout my career. Early on, he was a participant in various studies evaluating the safety and accuracy of first trimester chorionic villus sampling and early amniocentesis. During the past 14 years, his primary focus has been on fetal intervention. Subsequently, I have participated in a study to evaluate the use of robotic surgery for correction of fetal myelomeningocele in the ovine model. I have studied in major European fetal centers to learn the fetoscopic techniques that we have now incorporated into the clinical and research program at The Fetal Center in Houston, Texas including fetoscopic laser photocoagulation for complicated monochorionic twins, in utero shunting and open fetal surgery for fetal spina bifida. Dr Johnson was one of the founding members of the North American Fetal Therapy Network, a voluntary association of medical centers in the United States and Canada with established expertise in fetal surgery and other forms of multidisciplinary care for complex disorders of the fetus. He is the chairperson of the NAFTNet FETO Consortium. The consortium consists of 9 fetal treatment centers within the network who are evaluating the use of fetal endoluminal tracheal occlusion (FETO) for the treatment of fetal diaphragm hernia.
