Meg Chren
Dr. Chren is Professor and Chair of the Department of Dermatology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. She is an alumna of Smith College, received her MD from Yale, trained in Internal Medicine at Stanford, and in Dermatology and clinical epidemiology at University Hospitals of Cleveland. Until 2018 she was Professor at UCSF, where she oversaw the Program in Clinical Research in the Department of Dermatology. Her research focuses on understanding, measuring, and improving health outcomes of patients with chronic diseases. She has previously developed and validated the Skindex group of skin-related quality-of-life tools, which are widely used as outcomes measures. Dr. Chren’s current work at Vanderbilt focuses on measuring and communicating complex health attributes in user-friendly and interpretable ways. For example, her group developed the e-Skin Vital Signs, a digital tool that assesses a patient's experience of illness and communicates this information to the clinician before the office visit. The goal of this work is to personalize and improve care by including explicit measures of patients’ experience in the clinical encounter. Dr. Chren has mentored many junior researchers and has authored over 185 peer-reviewed papers. Her work has been funded by grants from the NIH, the VA, and the Dermatology Foundation.
