Matthew Wynia, MD, MPH
Matthew Wynia, MD, MPH is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, with additional training in public health and health services research. Following his medical training in Oregon and Boston, he led the Institute for Ethics at the American Medical Association in Chicago for 15 years, working on a variety of issues in professional ethics. In 2015, he was recruited to the University of Colorado to direct the Center for Bioethics and Humanities (CBH). CBH educates health professional students; facilitates clinical ethics case consultation for hospitals on Anschutz Medical Campus; and conducts research on complex ethical challenges in health care.
Dr. Wynia has led national projects on issues such as stakeholder engagement in research and policy making; ethics and quality improvement; communication, team-based care and engaging patients; public health and disaster ethics; and medicine and the Holocaust. He serves on the Health Sciences Policy Board of the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, and he has served on committees and panels for the National Academy of Medicine, the Joint Commission, DARPA, HHS, and others. Dr. Wynia has authored over 160 articles, co-edited several books, and co-authored a book on fairness in health care benefit design. He is a Fellow of the Hastings Center, past-president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities, past-chair of the Ethics Forum of the American Public Health Association and past-chair of the Ethics Committee of the Society for General Internal Medicine.
