Monica Gonzalez, MD, is a current UT Southwestern assistant professor and the associate medical director for the Parkland Inpatient Psychiatry Unit. She pursued a bachelor’s in biological sciences with a minor in gender studies from University of Notre Dame. She completed medical school at Texas A&M, and she graduated from UT Southwestern Psychiatry Residency in 2018, serving as Chief Resident in her final year. During her chief residency year, she founded the Bad Outcomes task force, now the Bad Outcomes committee, to create more discussion around adverse events. She worked with other residents to create more m&m conference opportunities in residency, present a special seminar for residents on adverse events and patient suicide, and create a standard operating procedure following adverse events. She is now the faculty advisor to the committee and has continued to work on development of department wide m&m conference opportunities; her team has successfully launched joint faculty and trainee case discussions around adverse events that have occurred at two of our main training hospitals. Her other interests include severe mental illness, global mental health, and being a faculty co-advisor to the resident formal mentorship committee. She enjoys working with patients who have severe mental illness in a place like Dallas which has such a culturally (race, gender, religion, family structure, etc.) diverse population.
