Performance Excellence and Quality Management 2023 (PExQM) Cohort 28 (RP2312A)

The Performance Excellence and Quality Management course was established with the goal of providing faculty and staff with the tools needed to initiate and maintain change. The purpose of this course is to provide healthcare professionals and staff with the skills and knowledge required to lead Quality Improvement (QI) projects and change initiatives. The course emphasizes the use of a systematic process to assess the current process/state; determine the root cause of problems; and explore, test, and deploy solutions to make sustainable improvements. Participants are required to work on a QI project during the course. Attendance at all classes and project completion including presentation of the QI project is required for graduation from the course. There are four monthly class days, and QI projects will be presented approximately six months after the program starts.

Learning Objectives

  1. Describe QI, continuous QI, what is quality, and who defines it.  
  2. Describe why quality is an imperative for organizational survival and is a core business strategy for healthcare.  
  3. Describe the QI process as a pragmatic science that gathers evidence, defines causes, implements changes, and measure result over time.
  4. Utilize PDCA and/or DMAIC as process improvement methodologies.
  5. Utilize quality tools including process mapping, run charts, brainstorming, Pareto diagrams, histograms, root cause analysis (RCA), team development, and change management.
  6. Describe statistics, statistical control, and variation including standard deviation, process capability, confidence and probability, distribution, correlation and causation, dependent and independent variable, and hypothesis development.  
  7. Describe the types of control charts and when to use them. Describe variation in data and data collection.
  8. Describe lean methodology and how this methodology allows health care institutions to improve the quality of care for patients by reduction in waste and errors.
