Carl Piel, Jr, DO, FACEP
Carl Piel, D.O., is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at UT Southwestern Medical Center and the Medical Director of the Emergency Department at William P. Clements Jr. University Hospital. He is also the Medical Director for the CUH Geriatric Emergency Department. He specializes in airway management, cardiology, dysrhythmias, heart failure, sepsis, Ebola, and special pathogens.
Dr. Piel earned his medical degree at the University of North Texas Health Science Center – Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. After completing an emergency medicine special emphasis track, he then completed a residency in emergency medicine at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine at Midwestern University, serving as Chief Resident.
Board certified in emergency medicine by the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine, he joined UT Southwestern in 2001.
At UTSW’s Clements University Hospital, Dr. Piel also serves as Chair of the clinical operations committee, Co-Director of the special pathogen program, and Co-Chair of the Emergency Department expansion committee as well as numerous other committees dealing with quality, stroke and STEMI.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and a member of several other professional organizations,including the American Osteopathic Association, the American College of Osteopathic Emergency Physicians, and the Dallas County Medical Society. He serves on the Texas College of Emergency Physicians Membership committee and is on the ACEP Emergency Medicine Practice Committee.
