Newton Kendig, Medical Degree

Dr. Newton E. Kendig is an infectious disease physician who completed his subspecialty training at Johns Hopkins University in 1991. He is a recognized leader in correctional medicine having served as the Medical Director for the Federal Bureau of Prisons from 1999 to 2015 as an assistant surgeon general of the United States Public Health Service. In 2017, Dr. Kendig was appointed Clinical Professor of Medicine at GW SMHS to spearhead a criminal justice health initiative for the university. His program includes launching the nation’s first graduate degree program in Correctional Health Care Administration, public policy development, and creating clinical care opportunities for training physicians to manage patients experiencing incarceration and those involved in the criminal justice system under community supervision.
