Matteo Maria Ottaviani
Dr. Matteo Maria Ottaviani graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Turin in 2017. He was one of the first ten students to undertake the MD-PhD program held by the same University, working as an undergraduate research fellow in Prof. Carbone's cellular electrophysiology lab within the Department of Drug Science and Technology of Turin and Striessnig's lab at the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology, Institute of Pharmacy of the University of Innsbruck. He got a Master of Science in 2017 in Cellular Electrophysiology from the University of Turin. In 2021, he completed his Ph.D. in Translational Medicine and Bioelectronic Medicine at Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies of Pisa, working in the field of autonomic neuromodulation, performing in vivo electrophysiological studies with advanced neural interfaces in swine models. During his Ph.D., Dr. Ottaviani had the opportunity to work in the Human Neurophysiology Lab of Monash University in Melbourne alongside Prof. Vaughan Macefield to develop an ultrasound-guided microneurography approach to obtain the first-ever recordings of vagal activity in awake humans. He undertook postdoctoral studies in the same lab in 2023 and in Prof. Venturelli's lab within the Department of Neurosciences, Biomedicine, and Movement Sciences of the University of Verona. Currently, Dr. Ottaviani is training in neurosurgery at the Polytechnic University of Marche, focusing on functional neurosurgery.
