Prof. Dr.med.habil. Dr. h.c. Max J. Hilz, M.D., FEAN, FAAN
specialized in Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology, Neurological Intensive Care Medicine, and Disorders of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). He was Professor of Neurology, Medicine, and Psychiatry at New York University, New York, NY, Chair in Autonomic Neurology at the Institute of Neurology, Queen Square, London, UK, and until April 2019 Professor of Neurology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. Since June 2015, he is also Adjunct Professor of Neurology at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY, USA.
He chairs the Autonomic Disorders Research Group in the World Federation of Neurology and is Past-Chair of the EAN Autonomic Nervous System Scientific Panel and of the Autonomic Section of the American Academy of Neurology, Past-President of the German Autonomic Society and of the European Federation of Autonomic Societies. He also served on the Board of Directors of the American Autonomic Society He is on the editorial board of Clinical Autonomic Research and the European Journal of Neurology, Associate Editor of Autonomic Neuroscience: Basic and Clinical, and of Neurological Sciences. He was a member of the small group that created the examination for the Autonomic Disorders subspecialty certification of the American United Council of Neurologic Subspecialties, UCNS. Prof. Hilz also serves as an advisor to the European Medicines Agency, EMA, on issues related to the autonomic nervous system. He co-authored several guidelines, e.g., on syncope, erectile dysfunction, orthostatic hypotension, supine hypertension, and on diabetic neuropathy, and he published more than 350 original and review articles in peer-reviewed journals, and book chapters.
Until 2007, he served as the Associate Director of the Dysautonomia Treatment and Evaluation Center at New York University where he developed a keen interest in rare autonomic diseases, particularly Familial Dysautonomia and other Hereditary Sensory and Autonomic Neuropathies. Prof. Hilz is interested in peripheral and central autonomic nervous system disorders, including Hereditary Sensory and Autonomic Neuropathies, Fabry disease, TTR-Familial Amyloid Polyneuropathy, central autonomic dysfunction, e.g. after stroke, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, or traumatic brain injuries.
He mentored more than fifty doctoral students and fellows from many different countries during their stays in his autonomic laboratories in Germany and New York, and he feels committed to teaching junior colleagues and students about autonomic disorders and diagnostic approaches. He wants to foster a global understanding of autonomic disorders and their diagnosis, and he is eager to support novel treatment options for the benefit of patients with autonomic diseases.
