KAMAL RAHMOUNI, PhD
I am a
Kamal Rahmouni is a professor in the Department of Neuroscience & Pharmacology and Internal Medicine. He holds the E. Dale Abel Fraternal Order of Eagles Diabetes Research Center Chair and serves as Director of the Obesity Research and Education Initiative and Interim Co-Director of the FOEDRC. Dr. Rahmouni received his PhD in Molecular Pharmacology in 2000 from the Louis Pasteur University in Strasbourg (France). He then moved to the University of Iowa for postdoctoral training with Dr. Allyn Mark. After completing his postdoctoral work, Dr. Rahmouni stayed at the University of Iowa moving in rank to become professor with Tenure in 2012.
The overall goal of Rahmouni’s research is to understand the fundamental processes involved in the control of body weight and blood pressure in health and disease. His work which resulted in more than 150 publications has led to the identification of novel mechanisms that underlie obesity and associated disorders including type 2 diabetes and hypertension. He is the recipient of a number of prestigious honors and awards including the Paul Korner Award from the International Society of Hypertension and the Mid-Career Award for Research Excellence from the Council on Hypertension of the American Heart Association. National and international recognition of his work and expertise is evident from the frequent invitation to present his research at various national and international meetings and colleagues and universities in the US and worldwide.
Dr. Rahmouni serves on the editorial board of several journals and is currently the regional editor (USA) of the Current Hypertension Reviews and he was recently selected to serve as Editor-in-Chief of Frontiers in Physiology - Metabolic Physiology. He has served on various study sections and review groups for different national and international organizations including the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Rahmouni is also actively involved with numerous scientific organizations including the American Physiological Society and the American Heart Association.
