Dr Tom Claydon received a B.Sc.(Hons) in Physiology from the University of Leeds, UK in 1998, and continued his studies at Leeds with Drs Clive Orchard and Mark Boyett, culminating in a Ph.D. in Ion Channel Physiology in 2001. He then completed Postdoctoral Fellowships with Dr Mark Boyett (Leeds, UK) and Dr David Fedida (UBC, Vancouver, Canada). He was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Physiology and Kinesiology (BPK) at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver in 2008 and is currently Professor within the Molecular Cardiac Physiology Group. His research examines the biophysics and physiology of potassium channels, spanning diverse channel subtypes and considering the impacts of various physiological and pathophysiological influences on ion channel function. His current research focuses on examination of the function and dysfunction of the hERG cardiac potassium channel using electrophysiological and optical mapping techniques in human induced pluripotent stem cell derived cardiomyocytes (hiPSC-CMs), zebrafish hearts, and heterologous cell systems. His research has contributed to our understanding of potassium channel function, and in particular, the function of the hERG potassium channel in genetic and acquired Long QT Syndrome, life-threatening cardiac disorders associated with arrhythmia.
