Kevin Hellman, PhD
Kevin Hellman, PhD is a Research Associate Professor at NorthShore – Edward-Elmhurst Health / University of Chicago. His research focuses on identifying the causes of dysmenorrhea, or period pain, and developing treatments for this condition (cureperiodpain.org)—including a focus on autonomic mechanisms.
Dysmenorrhea is a pervasive issue affecting reproductive-aged women and is the leading cause of school and work absences and a primary risk factor for chronic visceral pain. Currently, Dr. Hellman holds an associate professor level research faculty position at the University of Chicago in Obstetrics and Gynecology and directs a lab at NorthShore University Health System. Over the past 14 years, Dr. Hellman has collaborated with Dr. Frank Tu, an academic clinical scientist specializing in pelvic pain, to develop innovative imaging and sensory testing techniques that help elucidate the mechanisms responsible for menstrual pain. These methods can also be used to identify potential risk factors and aid in developing preventative strategies. His recent review article on dysmenorrhea http://doi.org/10.1016/j.ajog.2017.08.108 provides a roadmap for developing effective treatments for menstrual pain. Dr. Hellman's research is critical as few other laboratories are dedicated to addressing dysmenorrhea, a condition that causes significant suffering and gender disparity worldwide. Through his groundbreaking work, Dr. Hellman seeks to improve the quality of life for millions of people affected by pelvic pain and train a cadre of future investigators to revolutionize the study of visceral pain
