Faculty Wellness Retreat: Enhancing Efficiency, Embracing Trust to Maximize Professional Fulfillment
DESCRIPTION
The 2024 Faculty Wellness Retreat will provide specific ways to optimize professional fulfillment by optimizing psychological safety, personal professional and team efficiency, and create a high performing culture in health care. The National Academy of Medicine as well as the US Surgeon General’s office has recognized physician and healthcare burnout as a major threat to the healthcare workforce. Understanding that a healthy and mentally and physically well academic medicine workforce improves patient outcomes and safety, advances research and innovation, and educates the leaders of medicine of the future. Faculty will be empowered to maximize their own professional wellbeing by optimizing their efficiency and the efficiency of the systems in which they work to allow them to concentrate on the aspects of the career that provide them with joy and fulfillment in medicine. Topics include relationship-centered communications to enhance team efficiency, efficacy, and trust, professional efficiency optimization through understanding how to categorize, prioritize, and communicate professional work and responsibilities, electronic medical record optimization, and the importance of psychological safety and the effects of relational coordination on enhancing institutional performance, quality, and achievement.
Target Audience
Providers across all medical specialties, and especially UTSW Medical School faculty.
Learning Objectives
Psychological Safety
1. Identify how to elicit a list of concerns when speaking with team members
2. Identify how to explore another person’s perspective, responding with compassion, sharing digestible amounts of information, then assessing the other person’s understanding and alignment with the plan.
3. Identify the connection between psychological safety and organizational performance
4. Identify how leadership can foster a culture of trust, value, and psychological safety within all areas of an academic medical center and high reliability health organizations.
Professional Fulfillment
1. Identify current workload/responsibilities to ensure the alignment with vision and values.
2 Identify methods of prioritizing tasks to increase efficiency.
3. Implement time management techniques such as task batching and time blocking to enhance their efficacy.
4. Identify the components of effective relational coordination
5. Identify scenarios in their current work environments where they can use relational coordination to enhance their team workflows
Electronic health record practice optimization
1. Identify tools which may be helpful to optimize their Epic use.
2. Create new EHR SmartPhrases, quick actions, and workflows in their own EHR environment with support from EHR trainers;
3. Identify new workflows or tools that they can bring back to their individual work units to improve clinic efficiency in the EHR
