Perioperative Pain Management in the Era of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery

Optimal pain management facilitates mobilization and enhances postoperative recovery. However, postoperative pain continues to be poorly managed. The reasons for suboptimal pain management are many including inadequate or improper clinical application of available analgesic therapies, most likely due to non-specific and conflicting guidelines with regards to optimal drug combinations. Optimal analgesic regimens would include a combination of non-opioid analgesics with different mechanisms of action. However, analgesic combinations are often illogical and inappropriately applied, and are not always integrated in a procedure-specific enhanced recovery pathway. This presentation discusses the evidence assessing multimodal analgesic regimens and recommends optimal analgesic combinations.
