49th Annual Carrell Krusen Neuromuscular Symposium (RP2702C)

February 25, 2027 to February 26, 2027

This symposium is a clinical education experience for members of multidisciplinary teams who care for patients with rare, complex neuromuscular diseases including hereditary muscular dystrophies, motor neuron diseases, neuroimmunologic neuropathies and rare genetic disorders of muscle and nerve. Case presentations will include physical diagnosis and discussion of management and new therapies by participating experts. All discussions involve active participation by attendees. The educational format for this activity includes didactic lectures with in-depth Q&A, and panel discussions. The content of the program is identified and developed through a Call for Abstracts process. The 2027 keynote speaker, Diana Bharucha-Goebel, MD, Medical Director of the Gene Therapy Center of Excellence at Nationwide Children's Hospital, will present on the evolving landscape of AAV-mediated gene therapy for pediatric neuromuscular disease, including vector design, route of administration, and immune modulation strategies to optimize safety and efficacy in patients receiving gene replacement therapy.

Learning Objectives

1.    Discuss the principles of AAV-mediated gene transfer as applied to pediatric neuromuscular disease, including route of administration and immune modulation strategies used to optimize safety and efficacy.
2.    Review outcome measures and trial-readiness considerations for ultra-rare neuromuscular conditions.
3.    Identify practical considerations for patient selection, counseling, and post-treatment monitoring as gene therapies move into broader clinical use.
4.    Discuss recent advances in the genetic diagnosis of neuromuscular disorders, in research and clinical practice and the latest developments in treatment such as gene replacement therapy, cell therapy and forms of RNA therapy.
5.    Review the pathophysiology, genetic underpinnings, and current treatment strategies for metabolic myopathies
6.    Recognize the clinical applications of results of imaging both MRI and ultrasound as well as histopathology in neuromuscular disorders.
