The audience will become more familiar with special populations in stroke prevention, diagnosis and treatment, including pediatrics and women. Special circumstances which impact care include hypercoaguable states, strokes in head trauma and the use of new novel anticoagulants in secondary stroke prevention. A lecture on sampling these special groups will offer better understanding of outcomes in trials which lead to change in practice. For facilities seeking stroke center designation or advancement to a comprehensive stroke center, the discussion on best practice of a comprehensive stroke center will bring focus and reality to the goals of a program

Target Audience

This program is specifically designed for Primary Care providers, Internists, APNs, RNs, EMS and Allied Health Professionals desiring advanced knowledge in stroke.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to link the educational objectives to Core Competencies (Medical Knowledge) and:

  • Recognize stroke risks in special populations including women and children.
  • Appropriately identify risk factors for stroke including obstructive sleep apnea and hypercoaguable states.
  • Apply the appropriate use of new novel anticoagulants in secondary stroke prevention.
  • Reflect on best practice habits of a comprehensive stroke center.
  • Review the treatment decisions of trauma related stroke.
  • Examine how quality data leads to change in care paradigms for special populations.
