The purpose of this program is to provide the most up-to-date information on neuro-ophthalmic problems and educate the medical community in areas of particularly common or difficult neuro-ophthalmic issues so as to better prepare the clinician should they encounter a patient with such a problem. It is particularly
important for the primary clinician to be aware of these topics since a referral to a neuro-ophthalmic specialist cannot always occur in a timely fashion (due to practitioner scarcity).
Target Audience
This symposium is designed for ophthalmologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons and other physicians and health care providers interested in neuro-ophthalmic disorders, including diagnosis and therapy.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to link the educational objectives to Core Competencies (Medical Knowledge and Patient Care) and be able to:
- Identify mitochondrial optic neuropathies and utilize diagnostic tools for new treatment approaches
- Identify the neuro-ophthalmic complications of a stroke and the approach to treatment
- Discuss diagnosing and treating optic nerve gliomas in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1)
- Discuss how to approach neuro-ophthalmic problems in an environment without modern diagnostic tools and tests
