Cardiovascular & Thoracic Surgery Visiting Lectureship (RP1609C)
Atrial fibrillation is a common arrhythmia in patients with mitral valve disease. Patients with severe mitral valve disease frequently require surgical correction and a concomitant operative procedure (the Maze procedure) can be performed with a high success rate in eliminating this arrhythmia. Learners will be able to understand the indications for adding the Maze procedure to surgical mitral valve repair, will understand the technical components of this procedure, and will gain understanding of the short and long term complications and long term success rates of this operation.
Dr. Ralph Damiano will present lecture entitled, "Treatment of Atrial Fibrillation in Patients with Mitral Valve Disease." Dr. Damiano is nationally recognized for his contributions in this field and will be able to provide a perspective on the valve of this operation in this important patient population.
Target Audience
This program is designed for physicians, NP, PA, nurses and scientists/researchers
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participants will be able to:
- Recognize and assess indications for Maze procedure in patients with mitral valve disease
- Describe technical details of the Maze procedure
- Recognize and apply knowledge of postoperative complications related to the Maze procedure
- Describe the long term outcomes following the Maze procedure
