EM2408C "Staying Afloat in a Sea of Pain" (IM-GR 080924)
Purpose and Overview
Nearly 70% of hospitalized patients experience acute pain, yet most physicians are not provided a strong foundation for pain management during training. As a result, there can be increased patient suffering, slowed recovery time, patient/family dissatisfaction with care, increased length of stay and increased complications, among others. The goal of this lecture is to provide that foundation for the approach and adequate management of acute pain complaints in the hospitalized patient.
Target Audience
UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Feel more comfortable addressing and treating acute pain complaints in the hospitalized patient
- Obtain a targeted patient history in order to optimize a pain regimen
- Increase use of conservative measures for pain management
