Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Understand the pathophysiology of sickle cell disease.
  • List potential complications of transfusion in the sickle cell population.
  • Identify indications for simple and exchange PRBC transfusions in a patient with sickle cell disease.
  • Name and describe the mechanisms of action of the 4 FDA-approved disease modifying therapies for sickle cell disease.
