Purpose and Overview

Behcet’s disease is a rare disease with geographic varaiation in incidence and clinical features. It is an autoinflammatory disease with protean manisfestations that overlap with several more common diseases. This lecture will introduce this disease, explain the known aspects of its pathogenesis and draw comparisons with similar diseases. Diagnosis, differential diagnosis and treatment approaches will be briefly discussed. The importance of studying rare diseases will be presented.

Target Audience

UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Explain the geographic variation in Behcet’s disease and understand distinct disease clusters
  • Appreciate the role of the innate immune system in disease pathogenesis
  • Differentiate Behcet’s disease from Crohn’s disease and other conditions
