EM2209F "Approach to Interstitial Lung Disease" (IM GR-093022)
Purpose and Overview
The purpose of this talk is to provide the internist with an approach to patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD). ILD is an important topic for the internist because it is common and has implications for treatment of other conditions. Using an algorithm and a case, we will outline the diagnostic evaluation for a patient with ILD, beginning with high resolution computed tomography (HRCT) followed by the use of the history and physical examination to divide ILDs into those of known cause (ie medications, autoimmune disease, or exposures) and idiopathic ILDs. We will discuss that biopsy is limited to patients for whom the HRCT findings and history do not provide a clear diagnosis. Finally, we will review some common medications used for the treatment of interstitial lung disease.
Target Audience
UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Understand the definition of ILD and its importance for internists
- Use the HRCT and patient history to begin the diagnostic evaluation of ILD
- Know the benefits and side effect profile of nintedanib and pirfenidone
