About This Course

The Quality Improvement Methodology modules will provide basic training on essential tools and methodologies for continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities. These self-paced, on-demand modules are appropriate for anyone interested in learning about and participating in quality improvement (QI) activities. Specific topics include an introduction to Quality Improvement, Patient Safety, High Reliability and QI versus Research. Other topics cover various basic and intermediate QI tools and the PDSA, DMAIC-Six Sigma, Failure Mode Effect Analysis (FMEA). and Lean methodologies. Anyone interested in improving their general knowledge of QI and those who need a refresher on specific tools and methodologies can benefit. This online activity includes video animations and interactive questions designed to help learners self-assess their comprehension.  The ultimate goal of this course is to provide clinicians with the knowledge needed about incorporating quality improvement (QI) methodologies into clinical practice in order to improve patient care.  

Method of Participation

This continuing medical education enduring material is in an interactive web format. The estimated time to complete this activity is 1.5 hours.

Hardware/software requirements: Activities will run on desktop or mobile device using the most recent version of common browsers, including Internet Explorer, Safari, or Google Chrome.

Target Audience

Providers from all specialties, residents, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, social workers, nurse practitioners, radiologists, pharmacists, etc.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Identify QI tools and implement them into practice demonstrating quality improvement
  • Employ the use of different QI methodologies (PDSA, DMAIC, Lean, etc.)
  • Analyze findings using statistical tools for improvement in patient care, QI projects, etc.
  • Utilize information technology to optimize learning and just-in-time refresher learning
  • Apply knowledge obtained from Quality Improvement to improving the health system, mentorship with medical students, and clinical care.

Course Instructions

    How do I view the required videos in the Gallery?

    • Locate the Course Progress menu (left side of screen)
    • Click on "Quality Improvement Methodologies Gallery" button
    • Select the "start" then the "launch" buttons to enter the gallery
    • A separate window pops up to view the Gallery videos
    • Use your mouse to move through the Gallery to find your topic
    • Point and click to enter that topic's room
    • View each video module in its entirety
    • View all required video modules
    • When finished, close the separate/pop-up Gallery video viewing window

    How do I proceed to the Post-Test?

    • Please note: Viewing all of the required videos will need to be completed in order to proceed.
    • To proceed to the posttest, select the "Next" button from the "Course Navigation" bar, at the bottom of the page
      • or select the succeeding option ("Post-Test") from the "Course Progress" menu, at left side of screen 
    • Post-Test pages appears
    • Click "Start Quiz"
    • Answer each question (select "Next" button to proceed to next question)
    • When final question is answered, select "Finish" button
    • Your post-test results appear (please review)
    • You have the option to download and/or print your post-test results
    • You have now completed the course

    Do I need to complete the course in one sitting?

    • Completing the course is not required in one sitting. 
    • You may exit the gallery and/or post-test and return at a later time to complete the course. 
    • When returning to the course, select the "Resume" button.
