EM2407C "Supply and Demand in Kidney Transplantation: Innovations to Improve the Equation" (IM GR-071924)
Purpose and Overview
The purpose of this presentation is to outline and review the current kidney transplant waiting list and discuss the implications of waiting time on patient survival. We will review the current state of kidney transplantation, including the benefits of transplantation versus dialysis and look at the number of patients listed as compared to the number of patients transplanted annually, thereby highlighting the “supply and demand” problem/organ shortage that exists. We will review the potential benefits of 3 novel strategies reduce waiting times and increase the “supply”: hepatitis c nat positive to nat negative, hiv positive to positive and xenotransplantation.
Target Audience
UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Explain the impact of extended waiting time for kidney transplantation on patient survival and the benefits of transplantation versus dialysis
- Explain the potential benefits of accepting a Hep C positive or HIV positive kidney in an appropriate recipient.
- Explain the existing barriers to xenotransplantation.
