Purpose and Overview

The purpose of this seminar is to introduce the field of biomaterials to an internist audience. We will review a case highlighting how biomaterials can be applied to improve patient outcomes, introduce basic principles of biomaterials, and apply this conceptual framework to several vignettes in which biomaterials can be used to prevent and treat disease.

Target Audience

UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Discuss the clinical motivation for biomaterials in orthopedic infectious diseases
  • Understand the basic principles of biomaterials
  • Be able to apply biomaterials to clinical vignettes
