EM2412F "Portal Hypertension: Evolving Paradigms in Diagnosis and Care" (IM GR - 121324)
Purpose and Overview
Review the pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of portal hypertension highlighting the innovation in noninvasive testing and early interventions to prevent decompensation.
Target Audience
UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Describe the mechanisms leading to increased portal pressure and etiologies of portal hypertension.
- Recognize the shift away from requiring histological or radiological diagnosis of cirrhosis to using noninvasive testing to instead identify compensated advanced chronic liver disease and clinically significant portal hypertension.
- Understand the role of disease management, use of medications such as non selective beta-blockers to prevent complications and recognize the impact of decompensation on overall prognosis.
