EM2603C "Substance Use Disorders and Impairment in the House of Medicine" (IM GR-03.13.26)
Purpose and Overview
The purpose of this lecture is to raise awareness of alcohol and drug addiction, as well as other causes of behavioral health impairment within the medical profession and to emphasize that substance use disorders are prevalent among healthcare providers, including physicians, nurses, and other medical professionals. Drawing on epidemiologic data, specialty-specific research, and personal experience, the presentation highlights the scope of substance use disorders in medicine, the cultural stigma and isolation that often prevent early recognition, and the risks these conditions pose to both clinicians and patient safety. The lecture also reviews warning signs of impairment, the role of physician health programs and institutional resources such as the RENEW Committee at UT Southwestern and Parkland, and the importance of education, early intervention, and supportive recovery systems. Ultimately, the talk encourages healthcare professionals to adopt less judgmental attitudes toward addiction, recognize potential impairment in colleagues or learners, and to promote a culture in medicine that prioritizes wellness, accountability, and recovery rather than silence or enabling.
Target Audience
UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.
