Purpose and Overview
Mast cell disorders encompass mastocytosis and mast cell activation syndromes. Mastocytosis is a primary disorder of the mast cell often associated with KIT mutations whereas mast cell activation syndromes can be encountered most often in secondary or idiopathic forms. Last decade has witnessed significant advances in treatment and diagnosis of mastocytosis, whereas significant challenges in mast cell activation syndrome remain.
Target Audience
UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Discuss diagnostic criteria for mastocytosis and mast cell activation syndromes
- Review novel tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapies for mastocytosis
- Explain the significance of tryptase in mastocytosis and mast cell activation syndromes
