Purpose and Overview

There are currently no evidence-based, sex-specific clinical guidelines. This lecture will focus on the importance and process of including sex differences in research. Although precision medicine is a key goal of biomedical research, often one of the most basic factors- sex- is not included.  Disaggregating data by sex is critical to understanding sex differences (defined as biological and genetic differences) as well as gender differences (defined as sociocultural differences). Identifying and then understanding these sex and gender differences will help guide healthcare.

Target Audience

UT Southwestern faculty, fellows, residents and medical students, community physicians, nurse clinicians, physician assistants and nurses.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Understand the differences between "sex" and "gender
  • Comprehend the importance of including sex disaggregated data in reports and manuscripts.
  • Utilize appropriate methods for incorporating sex and gender considerations in their scientific design.
