This one and one-half day course will focus on state of the art pediatric orthopedic treatment protocols at Scottish Rite for Children (SRC) and current research conducted by the residents, fellows and staff physicians at SRC. The program will utilize case presentations and question/answer format in addition to PowerPoint presentations. Faculty are also invited from across the country to share their research and practice protocols. Ample time will be allocated for discussion between audience and the faculty.

Target Audience

The course is designed for pediatric orthopedic surgeons and orthopedic surgeons with an interest in pediatric orthopedics. In addition, other healthcare providers are invited to attend but are reminded that the content will focus on pediatric orthopedics.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify complications associated with pediatric sports treatments and analyze the risk factors, technical errors, and decision‑making issues that contribute to poor outcomes.
  2. Recognize early warning signs of complications to support timely intervention and improved patient management.
  3. Evaluate strategies to reduce risk—including surgical technique modifications and optimized patient selection—to enhance safety in pediatric sports care.
  4. Assess the limitations of current complication reporting methods and explain how improved data collection and reporting can strengthen clinical decision‑making.
  5. Describe the development, implementation, and practical challenges of a prospective complication registry, and discuss best practices for ensuring its effectiveness in identifying correlates of complications. 
  6. Apply leadership and communication strategies that strengthen team cohesion and psychological safety in surgical and clinical settings.
  7. Demonstrate relational behaviors—such as empathy, humility, and reflective practice—that enhance leadership effectiveness and team performance.
  8. Discuss integration strategies of humanistic leadership principles into interactions with patients, families, and colleagues to improve the overall care experience.
