Bass Symposium 2027: "Thoughts that Move: Advances in Brain-Machine Interfaces to Restore Independence after Paralysis" (RP2703E)
The 2027 Bass Neurosurgery Symposium will provide a review of current clinical and research advancements in Brain-Machine Interfaces (BMI) technologies to clinicians, scientists, engineers, and healthcare teams (including neurosurgeons, rehabilitation specialists, therapists, nurses, and social workers), as well as individuals with lived experience on sensorimotor deficits, their caregivers and patient support systems. The symposium will emphasize emerging state-of-the-art innovations in implanted BMIs related to the restoration of sensation, communication, and movement. The goal is to foster multidisciplinary education in a focused, case-based format designed to highlight underlying neurophysiology, relevant anatomy, ethical considerations, best practices, and the latest evidence-based applications. After attending, participants are expected to have enhanced knowledge of these innovations and be able to apply this knowledge to advance care and outcomes for individuals with neurologic impairments.
Target Audience
- Clinicians
- Scientists
- Engineers
- Healthcare teams (including neurosurgeons, rehabilitation specialists, therapists, nurses, and social workers)
Learning Objectives
At this conclusion of this activity, learners should be able to:
- Describe the fundamental components, mechanisms, and clinical applications of invasive and non-invasive Brain-Machine Interfaces used to restore communication, movement, and sensation in individuals with paralysis.
- Name the components of a BMI: (1) neuroimaging technique to read brain activity in real-time, (2) feature extraction, (3) decoding of brain activity, (4) translation to device command
- Explain the difference between non-invasive (no surgery needed) and invasive (surgery needed) BMI approaches.
- Differentiate current BMI technologies and identify appropriate patients who may benefit from participation in BMI clinical trials or emerging clinical applications.
- Discuss patient-reported priorities, challenges, and quality-of-life considerations that should inform the clinical application and future development of Brain-Machine Interface technologies.
- List at least three priorities for health care during daily activities of people with severe paralysis.
