This CME presentation is based on national evidence-based Physician Best Practices. It emphasizes the collaborative approach and appropriate medical management as the most effective strategies to increase organ donations. Recent studies also confirm that critical care physicians are highly influential in increasing the number of organs transplanted per donor.

Target Audience

Critical Care Physicians, Intensivists, Pulmonologists, Trauma Surgeons, Fellows, Residents, Nurses, Physician Assistants, and all other health professionals involved in the medical care of critically ill patients.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

1. Discuss professional obligation in regards to organ donation.

2. Defend the need to minimize variability in establishing the diagnosis of brain death in practice settings.

3. State the importance of avoiding conflict of interest issues when dealing with families of potential organ donors.

4. Recognize the need to incorporate successful practices to aggressively minimize the compromising effects of brain death on (transplantable) organ function, inluding the results of catecholamine changes induced by brain death.

5. Apply multidisciplinary medical management strategies to preserve the option of donation for patients and families while the determination is made regarding brain death.
