2019 NASCAR Safety and Operations Summit (JS1901A)

The Safety and Operations Summit is an educational CME opportunity for personnel involved with the healthcare and safety of NASCAR drivers, crew members, and staff. The participants will receive instruction on topics relevant to their medical roles in the race environment including emergency on track medical response, neurologic evaluation and management, dermatological evaluation and management, and Safety Equipment Updates. The attendees will receive evidence-based instruction from expert instructors. The format will be primarily case-based and will utilize both didactic lectures and hands-on instruction.

Target Audience

This course is designed for Physicians, Nurses, Paramedics, EMT’s, Respiratory Therapists, Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapists and other personnel involved with the healthcare and safety of NASCAR drivers, crew members, and staff.

Learning Objectives

  • Share and discuss challenges and opportunities unique to providing medical care at large gatherings or events and use current literature to guide best practice solutions
  • Outline for the evaluation and management of protracted concussion recovery based on empirical evidence, clinical expertise, and the use of concussion screening tools like the King-Devick Test
  • Identify and describe risk factors for prolonged recovery from concussion
  • Evaluate a patient and look for expected injuries, including spinal injuries, based on observation and analysis of the incident on the scene
  • Identify most up-to-date techniques, and practice for in car accessing the driver, positioning, neck stabilization, helmet removal, airway access, vascular access, communication, tourniquet placement
  • Demonstrate high-yield diagnostic tests, exam techniques, and procedures that can be performed quickly in the Infield care center for headache/”dizziness” that may also allow driver, crew and fans to resume normal activities with minimal risk for side effects or additional impairment
  • Recognize the signs of traumatic brain injury or spine injury. Identify potential pitfalls in early management
  • identify common dermatological issues and mimics that may be seen in the track setting
