Gamma Knife Training Program (RP1912A-120919)
The UT Southwestern Gamma Knife Training Program provides a comprehensive understanding of the Gamma Knife for both new users and experienced individuals upgrading to the Gamma Knife Icon. The new user course is designed for individuals new to the Gamma Knife system who desire to develop a radiosurgery program. Our upgrade course is for experienced users aiming to learn the frameless capabilities of the Gamma Knife Icon. The overall course includes hands-on and didactic training with both frame-based and frameless radiosurgery of benign and malignant intracranial diseases (oncology, vascular, functional) including brain metastases, acoustic neuroma, trigeminal neuralgia, pituitary adenoma, meningioma, and arteriovenous malformation. This program also overs comprehensive training on the expanded utilization of the Gamma Knife Icon with frameless radiosurgery including fractionated, distributed, and staged radiosurgery for benign and malignant intracranial disorders.
This course is geared toward radiation oncologists, neurosurgeons, neuro-otologists and medical physicists.
Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge of stereotactic radiosurgery and its indications for benign and malignant intracranial diseases
- Demonstrate technical proficiency in stereotactic radiosurgery (frame application, mask simulation, treatment planning)
- Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate treatment paradigms with respect to target doses and critical structure tolerance in patients undergoing stereotactic radiosurgery
