John Nemunaitis, MD

Dr. Nemunaitis is the Chief Scientific Officer of Gradalis, Inc. He leads development of immunotherapeutics products under development at Gradalis. One product, Vigil, is at late stage development for product registration in ovarian cancer. Gradalis is a biotechnology company that Dr. Nemunaitis is a co-founder of since 2003.
Dr. Nemunaitis earned his medical degree at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, followed by residency training at Boston City Hospital in Massachusetts. He also completed a fellowship in oncology/hematology at the University of Washington School of Medicine’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle, Wash. He founded the Mary Crowley Cancer Research Translational Center and two biotech companies (Strike and Gradalis) before coming to Toledo where he was Chief of UT’s Division of Hematology and Oncology, Medical Director of the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center at The University of Toledo and Director of UT’s Jacobson Center for Clinical and Translational Research.
His specialties include general oncology, clinical trial development, genetic signal mapping and precision therapy. Likewise, his current research interests involve targeted immunotherapy, targeted molecular therapy and bioinformatics profiling. He is board-certified in internal medicine.
Dr. Nemunaitis has published 493 peer reviewed manuscripts and book chapters, has overseen management of over 600 clinical trials involving several thousand cancer patients, has carried out 72 government regulatory (FDA, RAC, IND) presentations for biotechnology product development and has 27 issued IPs across 5 patent families.
