The “Obesity Treatment Boot Camp” course has been designed to provide health care providers with practical advice for achieving healthy weight loss in patients with overweight and obesity. The course is divided into four sessions addressing:

     1) how the currently available obesity treatments are impacting people who live with obesity and public perceptions of obesity;

     2) motivational dietary and lifestyle intake;

     3) medications available to achieve weight wellness; and

     4) weight loss surgery options.

In addition to didactic lecture presentations and ample interactive Q&A after each session, patient vignettes that reinforce these concepts have been integrated into the course, as well as speaker panel discussions. This course is designed to be of benefit to Primary care providers, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and specialists in Internal Medicine, Family Practice, and Surgery seeking practical knowledge integrating evidence based medicine relating to care of patients with overweight and obesity.​​​​​

Learning Objectives

  • Recognize how currently available obesity treatments are affecting the lives and health of persons with obesity.
  • Review and discuss changing trends in public perceptions regarding obesity.
  • Apply the technique of motivational interviewing to best assess dietary intake of their patients.
  • Confidently prescribe the optimal medications to achieve weight loss.
  • Develop an integrated, multi-faceted treatment plan for their patients with obesity that may include bariatric surgery.

1–1:45 p.m.How to perform a motivational dietary intake with your patients - Jeff Schellinger, M.C.N., RD, CSOWMIn this seminar, registered dietician Jeff Schellinger will demonstrate how to conduct a motivational dietary intake with patients. The presentation will cover strategies for identifying patients' dietary goals, barriers to change, and readiness to make changes. Schellinger will discuss the use of motivational interviewing techniques to build rapport with patients and elicit their intrinsic motivation to make healthy dietary changes. The seminar will include practical tips for developing personalized dietary plans tailored to individual patients' needs and preferences.1:45–2:30 p.m.Practical aspects of using available obesity medications - Jaime Almandoz, M.D., M.B.A., FTOSHighly effective medications are revolutionizing the treatment of obesity. Patient-centered care includes knowing when to recommend additional therapies for weight loss and which ones to choose. This session will review the mechanisms of action and use of approved anti-obesity medications, including newer and emerging therapies.2:30–3:15 p.m.Weight loss surgery options for your patients - Melanie Hafford, M.D.This presentation by bariatric surgeon Dr. Melanie Hafford will cover the different surgical options available to assist in weight loss. The presentation will review the benefits, risks, and success rates associated with each type of weight loss surgery, including laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and adjustable gastric banding.
