Dr. Ileogben Sunday-Adeoye, a professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology is a multifaceted medical professional, celebrated for his outstanding contributions to the fields of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, obstetric fistula surgery, and Medical biochemistry. His extensive qualifications include MBBS, Masters degrees in Medical Biochemistry and Medical Sociology, Fellowship in Medical Education (FAIMER Institute, Philadephia, USA), Post graduate Diploma in Assisted Reproduction (Chennai, India), Post graduate training in Obstetric Fistula Surgery, Fellow of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS), Fellow of the International College of Surgeons (FICS), and recipient of the National Honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON), conferred upon him by the President and Commander in Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in 2010 in recognition of his exceptional contributions to maternal health in the country.
Notably, Dr. Sunday-Adeoye made history by serving as the pioneer medical director of Nigeria's first National Obstetric Fistula Hospital. He has also held the position of pioneer Chief Medical Director at Edo Specialist Hospital and is currently the pioneer acting Medical Director of the National Obstetric Fistula Centre in Benin City, reflecting his commitment to healthcare excellence. His groundbreaking achievement marked a significant milestone in obstetric surgery and fistula care, significantly improving the lives of countless women affected by this debilitating childbirth injury in several states in Nigeria and the Republics of Chad and Niger. His expertise in addressing obstetric fistula has earned him global recognition as a member of the International Obstetric Fistula Working group and National Obstetric Fistula working group. He served as the immediate past Executive Secretary of the International Society of Obstetric Fistula Surgeons (ISOFS).
In his role as an obstetric fistula surgeon, he has played a pivotal role in research and publications that have advanced the practice of obstetric fistula surgery, fostering international collaboration with partners like UNFPA, USAID, Engenderhealth, MSF, and Rotary, and enhancing the health and well-being of women worldwide.
As a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dr. Ileogben Sunday-Adeoye has left an indelible mark on the academic world. He has authored over eighty publications in reputable national and international medical journals and written chapters in text books, contributing substantially to medical knowledge. His scholarly work not only enriches the field but also serves as a source of inspiration for the next generation of medical professionals. He has trained and mentored medical students and residents in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, art and science of Obstetric Fistula surgery and Medical Biochemistry. He serves as an examiner in the West African College of Surgeons and external examiner to several Medical schools in Nigeria.
As the Coordinator/Director of the Mother and Child Care Initiative (MCCI) Programme, working with the wife of the Governor of Ebonyi State, Mrs. Josephine Elechi, he advanced the cause of women's health and that of children in Ebonyi State. He initiated and implemented innovative programmes that significantly reduced maternal mortality and morbidity in the state, like the formulation and implementation of the law on compulsory reporting of all maternal deaths in the state to maternal mortality and morbidity committees instituted at the ward, local government, and state levels. He was appointed by the Governor, Chief Martin Elechi, as Head of the MCCI Programme and Chairman of the State Committee to sensitize, implement, and supervise the implementation of the law across the state. The law also made compulsory the referral of all women in labour in peripheral facilities after a period of nine hours to centres where comprehensive emergency obstetric services were available. The implementation of this law was combined with advocacy and the implementation of almost free maternal health services for pregnant women in select health facilities across the state and a very robust medical outreach programme targeted at modifying the health-seeking behaviour of pregnant women in the state. Furthermore, among others, he initiated and implemented, under the Mother and Child Care Initiative Program, a breast and cervical cancer screening programme in all thirteen local government areas of the state, providing free screening and care for over eighteen thousand women within Ebonyi State and beyond, with routine follow-ups and referrals as indicated.
