ABOUT ITORO EZE-ANABA
Itoro Eze- Anaba is a lawyer who has worked in the area of violence against women and girls for the past 20 years during which she has achieved many milestones in promoting and protecting women’s rights in Nigeria. She drafted the first ever Domestic Violence Bill in Nigeria and campaigned for its passage into law in 12 states and at the National Assembly.
She is the founder of Mirabel Centre, Nigeria’s first Sexual Assault Referral Centre to provide free medical and psychosocial support to survivors of rape and sexual assault. With much diligence and sincere hard work, the Centre has helped over 8600 survivors to get over the trauma and get free special care. Mirabel Centre recently received the first royal recognition in Nigeria when Her Royal Majesty Queen Camilla of England (then Her Royal Highness, the Princess of Cornwall) became the first patron of the Mirabel Centre. Itoro also worked closely with the European Union/United Nation to establish Nana Khadija Centre in Sokoto and Nduru Centre in Ebonyi states which provide free support services to more than 2,000 survivors of violence against women and girls.
She has received several awards including the Commonwealth Point of Light Award by Her Majesty the Queen of England in recognition of the work being done at the Mirabel Centre. She was a fellow of the NGO Leadership Program, Indiana University, USA and Senior Fellow, Lagos Business School, Non Profit Management Programme. She is presently a member of UN/EU Spotlight Initiative Civil Society Reference Group, Nigeria and a member of Every Woman Coalition Working Group on International treaty on Violence Against Women.
A graduate of the University of Calabar, she received her LLM Masters in Law program at the American University, Washington College of Law, Washington DC where she specialized in Gender and the Law and also won the Outstanding Research and Writing Award. Itoro is the Managing Partner of Partnership for Justice and a member of the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team.
