Parkland Policy and Preventive Ethics - Session #4: Disability Ethics
Physicians and other healthcare providers strive to provide equitable health care to individuals with disabilities. The pandemic highlighted the issue of ableism and health disparities through the development of protocols for allocation of scarce resources that threatened access to care for disabled individuals. The professional practice gap observed across the healthcare landscape, according to the National Center for Disability, is “the lack of comprehensive disability clinical-care education and disability competency training among medical, nursing and other healthcare professionals perpetuates discrimination in healthcare against people with disabilities.” Furthermore, disability rights and disability ethics are a foundational component in the newly revised Texas Advance Directive Act and healthcare providers may not be aware of the applications to practice.
