Parkland Policy and Preventive Ethics - Session #5: Foundation: Incapacity Holds
Clinicians encounter patients in various states of emergency detention and are faced with acronyms of “APOWW,” “OPC,” and “MIW.” Professional practice gaps exist as medical staff lack both a clear understanding of the terms and an appreciation of the differences of these various forms of involuntary hold. The intent of these holds is to ensure the safety of the patient and others. Understanding the basis of these forms of emergency detention will highlight the barriers and discrimination faced by individuals with mental illness. Furthermore, clinical staff caring for patients under emergency detention must be made aware of the authority and the limitations provided by such an involuntary hold.
