Jane Edmond, MD

Dr. Jane Edmond is the Wong Family Distinguished University Chair and Professor, Department of Ophthalmology, Director of the Mitchel and Shannon Wong Eye Institute, and Interim Vice Dean for Professional Practice, Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Edmond’s alma mater is The University of Texas at Austin, graduating Summa Cum Laude, Special Honors in Biology and inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in 1981. She received her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society in 1985. She completed her residency in Ophthalmology at the Department of Ophthalmology, BCM, in 1989. She completed two fellowships: Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics, 1990, and Neuro-Ophthalmology, Baylor College of Medicine, 2006.
From 1991 to 1997 she served as faculty at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital. From 1997 to 2003 she served as faculty at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Scheie Eye Institute, and Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 2003 she returned to Houston, Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital, and was promoted to Professor in 2016. In January, 2018, Dr. Edmond was selected to be the Founding Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, and the Director of the Mitchel and Shannon Eye Institute, The University of Texas at Austin, Dell Medical School. Since that time Dr. Edmond has recruited faculty and staff, overseen the planning and construction of several ophthalmology clinics, and obtained ACGME approval for a new ophthalmology residency which began in 2022.
Dr. Edmond’s clinical and academic focus has been pediatric neuro-ophthalmology, the ophthalmic impact of craniosynostosis and pediatric brain tumors, and complex strabismus in adults and children. She has served as an author on over 70 peer-reviewed publications, 12 book chapters, and has delivered 97 national lectures, 16 international lectures, and 15 visiting professor presentations.
Dr. Edmond has been involved in graduate medical education. To date, she has trained over 250 residents from the ophthalmology departments of Baylor College of Medicine, Wills Eye Hospital, Scheie Eye Institute and Dell Medical School, and has trained 49 pediatric and neuro-ophthalmology fellows.
She serves as an oral board examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology since 2003.
Dr. Edmond served as President of AAPOS from 2019-2020. Her previous leadership roles include Director at Large, AAPOS Board of Directors, AAPOS Councilor to the AAO, and member of the editorial board, Journal of AAPOS. She is the recipient of the Marshall Parks Bronze Medal and an AAPOS Lifetime Achievement Award.
Dr. Edmond served as President of the AAO in 2024. Her previous leadership roles include Trustee at Large for the AAO Board of Trustees, and Chair of following AAO committees: Lifelong Education for the Ophthalmologist (LEO)/Maintenance of Certification Education Committee, Awards Committee, Membership Advisory Committee, Director of AAO Subspecialty Day in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and editorial board for the Basic and Clinical Science Course, Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, Volume 6. She is the recipient of the AAO Senior Honor Award.
