Simulation 101: Developing Excellence in Simulation-Based Education (FY26 Cohorts) RP2609B-100725
This course, offered by the UTSW Simulation Center team, is for faculty and healthcare educators, including Physicians, Fellows and Residents, Nurse Educators, School of Health Professions Faculty and other Healthcare Educators, who are new to simulation or would like to learn more about simulation-based education as a teaching/learning and assessment/evaluation strategy. The course consists of online modules, which learners complete asynchronously, followed by a full-day workshop in the UTSW Simulation Center. Participants interested in learning how to create/write their own simulation activities, can sign up for a second full-day workshop, scheduled two-three weeks after the first full-day workshop. The first workshop (Day One) focuses on simulation facilitation skills: Prebriefing, Facilitating, Debriefing, Providing Feedback, and Assessment & Evaluation of Learners. The format of the workshop includes small group discussion, role-play, and other experiential activities, allowing participants to practice facilitating simulation activities that utilize a variety of simulation modalities, designed for various learner groups, and with different objectives. Participants will be provided feedback on their performance from the Sim 101 faculty and their peers. Those participants interested in authoring their own simulation cases or scenarios as part of a new simulation activity, can opt to attend the Day Two workshop. Sim 101 enrollees will need to declare their intention to participate in Day Two, at the end of Day One, so a Sim 101 faculty mentor can be assigned. Day Two Participants will be supported in their effort to write a simulation scenario (for use with a high-fidelity manikin) or a simulated case (for use with a Standardized Patient (SP)). The Day Two agenda will allow time for programing of manikin or training the SP, during the morning and then facilitation of their simulation in the afternoon. Simulation 101 is offered three times per year in Spring (April), Summer (July or August) and Fall (October). This course is based upon the foundational content originally developed by the Simulation Faculty Development Committee in 2018; content is reviewed and updated annually.
Target Audience
Faculty and healthcare educators, including Physicians, Fellows and Residents, Nurse Educators, School of Health Professions Faculty and other Healthcare Educators, who are new to simulation or would like to learn more about simulation-based education as a teaching/learning and assessment/evaluation strategy.
Learning Objectives
- 1. Discuss the current Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice (HSSOBP) and the impact of their application.
- 2. Describe the theoretical underpinnings of simulation-based education.
- 3.Define simulation modalities that are useful in simulation-based education and select the appropriate modality for their planned activities.
- 4. Explain the importance of pre-briefing and debriefing/reflective techniques; demonstrate techniques for debriefing with good judgment.
- 5. Develop and execute a simulated experience with discreet learning objectives and constructive debrief session.
