John R. Lynn, M.D. Lectureship in Ophthalmology (RP1504C)
Describe current treatment strategies for glaucoma with an emphasis upon comprehensive evaluation and medical treatment as well as minimally invasive surgical techniques.
Target Audience
The course is designed for practicing and academic ophthalmologists, residents and fellows in training, and other health care providers interested in a comprehensive update on the advances in medical and surgical treatment of glaucoma.
Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to link the education objectives to Core Competencies (Medical Knowledge and Patient Care) and be able to:
- Recognize the differences that exist between branded and generic glaucoma medications in efficacy and tolerability among patients
- Evaluate the safety and efficacy of lens/cataract extraction in certain patients with narrow-angle/angle-closure glaucoma vs. standard therapies
- Explain the underlying molecular mechanisms for elevated intraocular pressure and subsequent retinal ganglion cell death in glaucomatous optic neuropathy
- Recognize the ocular and systemic manifestations of pseudoexfoliation and discuss novel approaches to therapy
