The purpose of the Clinical Safety & Effectiveness (CS&E) course is to provide UT Southwestern faculty and staff the skills, knowledge, and tools necessary to lead quality improvement projects and change initiatives.  During the CS&E course, participants are provided with a working knowledge of various quality improvement methodologies and tools that can be used to identify improvement opportunities.  Participants are required to complete a quality improvement project and present their findings during the last day of the course.  Course topics include development of a project aim state, use of PDCA or DMAIC as process improvement tools, process mapping, control charts, root cause analysis, team development, and change management.

Target Audience

The target audience for this program includes physicians, nurses, pharmacists, therapists, technologists, other healthcare providers and health system leaders who are committed to the implementation, development, and maintenance of change initiatives in their departments and organizations.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Describe quality improvement (OI) including the case for continuous QI, what is quality and who defines it.  Describe how continuous quality improvement (CQI) contributes to improved patient safety.  Describe lessons from industry, our current state, equitable medical care, and public health policy
  • Describe and recognize the differences between research and QI projects.  Complete the Institutional Review Board (IRB) checklist for the team project.
  • Describe planning for project success and the basic tools used for project success.
  • Describe the use of and types of control charts in improvement projects.  Describe variation in data and data collection.
  • Discuss and receive feedback on QI project Aim Statements.
  • Describe the use of quality tools in the improvement project.
  • Describe the methodology used to define, analyze, determine cause, implement a solution, and track outcomes.
  • Demonstrate the graphical representation/schematic of a process and discuss process mapping
  • Describe human errors and medical errors and the methodologies of root cause analysis in health care.
  • Through a hands-on simulation, describe the use of Lean methodology that allows health care institutions to improve the quality of care for patients by eliminating waste.
  • Describe AHRQ TeamSTEPPS with focus on leadership, communication errors, direction and recovery, teamwork and mutual support and situation awareness.
  • Describe Leadership and Change Management.
  • Describe the adaptive leadership model and applications to improvement project.
  • Describe High Reliability Organization (HRO), the interface between error and reliability, history of the development of reliability theory.
  • Describe how to sustain improvements after improvement implementation.  Describe the presentation of the quality improvement project to an audience via power point and poster.
  • Describe the “Community of Trusting Partners” and “Servant Leadership.”
  • Describe conflict styles and methods to deal with each type.
  • Describe current national issues of clinical quality and patient safety and comparisons of healthcare throughout the world.  Describe how quality improvement is a science of process management and the differences between the science of research and the science of quality improvement.  Describe the concepts and tools of pragmatic science and the differences between quality assurance and IQ and the use QI tools in improvement projects.
