Ophthalmology at the Crossroads 2018 (RP1812E)

This course is designed to bring the cutting edge basic and clinical research findings to both the practicing general ophthalmologist and sub-specialist in all fields of ophthalmology, including the seven sub-specialty areas: cornea and external disease, retina and vitreous surgery, pediatric ophthalmology, neuro-ophthalmology, ophthalmic plastic surgery, ophthalmic pathology, and glaucoma. This course also offers a medical ethics lecture and updates regarding changes in healthcare policy.

Target Audience

This symposium is designed for practicing and academic ophthalmologists.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to link the educational objectives to Core Competencies (Medical Knowledge and Patient Care) and be able to:

  • Evaluate necessity of ancillary testing and recognize financial pressure as possible motivator for over-prescribing.
  • Apply changing documentation rules to increase Medicare coverage of diagnostic tools and therapies.
  • Discuss updates on American Board of Ophthalmology certification requirements and anticipated changes for future candidates.
  • Compare recent findings in cataract surgery and improvements in IOLs for improving post-surgical complications.
  • Recognize relationship between organizational civility climate, employee satisfaction, and patient outcomes.
  • Identify common office coding issues to improve documentation compliance and patient coverage.
  • Discuss research findings and ethical questions about integration of artificial Intelligence systems in the field of ophthalmology.
  • Identify effects of stem cell-based therapies on retinal regeneration and potential impact on retinal diseases.
  • Evaluate potential limiting factors and resource opportunities for improving treatment of retinal detachment.
